Acle Academy is part of the Wensum Trust family of schools. The overall strategic direction of all schools in the trust is the responsibility of the Board of Trustees (Pen portraits available on Wensum Trust website). Each school however has a Local Governing Body (LGB) which has powers according to the Scheme of Delegation. The Trust operates a system of “Earned Autonomy” i.e. the better the school, the lighter is the touch from the trust.
The Local Governing Body of Acle Academy has recently been appointed by the trustees. It consists of several of the newer governors who have been responsible, along with the excellent Principal and new Leadership Team in ensuring the school is making effective progress to the removal of the school from special measures. In addition the LGB now has two parent governors and a staff governor.

Ten Essential Features of an Effective Governing Body
• There is clarity of understanding of the governor role, awareness of the key relationships and boundaries between lead professional staff and the Governing Body.
• Governors hold a shared vision for the school which is clear, understood and well communicated to staff, parents and pupils
• The governing body sets the strategic direction of the school and has a central role in the leadership of the school.
• Governors are confident in providing high levels of professional challenge to hold the Principal to account including their responsibilities for performance management.
• The governing body knows the school, its strengths and weaknesses, understanding data and knowing how to use it to raise standards. There is an ongoing commitment to monitoring and evaluation of school performance and offering the right level of challenge and support.
• Governors have a realistic plan for school development, ensuring it is implemented and resourced effectively including the use of the pupil premium and the impact on attainment.
• Governors engage effectively with parents, pupils and staff and are well informed about their views and use this to inform strategic priorities for development planning.
• Governors are fully and systematically involved in the evaluation process, keeping the work of the school under review and acting upon their findings.
• The governing body has adopted a robust approach to self review of its own performance, which includes a plan for improvement including personal development for individual governors.
• There are effective working practices including individual roles and the governing body structure is fit for purpose. Having governors with personal commitment for the time the role takes. The governing body needs a balance of skills and a planned approach to recruitment and succession planning.
